How to Get Your eSIM

  1. Pick Your Portugal Plan
Choose from data packages sized for a Lisbon city break or a multi-week Portugal trip — plans work across the entire country, not just LIS.
  2. Install Before Your Flight
Scan the QR code at home over WiFi. The profile sits dormant until you activate, so install the night before you depart for Humberto Delgado.
  3. Activate After Landing at LIS
Once your aircraft reaches the gate, switch off airplane mode. Your phone connects through NOS or MEO networks before you unbuckle.
  4. Clear Immigration With Data Live
Use the queue time to pull up your hotel address, check Uber availability at Terminal 1, and message your pickup — no WiFi hunt required.
  5. Keep Your Home Number Active
Your home SIM stays on for incoming calls via dual-SIM mode. Use WhatsApp or FaceTime over eSIMno data for outgoing calls to avoid roaming charges.

Traveler Tips

  • Non-Schengen immigration queues at LIS can run 30-60 minutes during peak arrival banks — budget connection time accordingly and use the wait to coordinate ground transport on data.
  • Terminal 2 handles low-cost departures only; arrivals for all airlines route through Terminal 1. The free shuttle between terminals runs every 10-15 minutes.
  • The Metro Linha Vermelha from Aeroporto to São Sebastião takes around 20 minutes and costs €1.80 on a Viva Viagem card — load the card at any metro station.
  • Uber and Bolt pickup zones sit at the departures level TVDE area outside Terminal 1 — your app needs data to request the ride and track the driver.
  • Activate eSIM after the captain clears phone use; by the time you reach the jet bridge your rideshare app is already loading pickup options.
  • Portugal coverage extends nationwide — the same eSIM keeps working on day trips to Sintra, Porto, or the Algarve without a second SIM swap.

Why You Need an eSIM at LIS

Humberto Delgado Airport sits closer to its city centre than almost any major European hub — 7 kilometres from Baixa-Chiado puts you 20 minutes from Rossio on the Metro Linha Vermelha. That proximity means ground transport decisions happen fast: Uber surge pricing shifts between Terminal 1 and the departures-level TVDE zone depending on queue length, Bolt availability updates in real time, and the Aerobus Line 1 schedule (departures every 20-30 minutes, around €4 one-way) benefits from a live tracker rather than guesswork.

Free airport WiFi exists but requires registration through a captive portal that jet-lagged arrivals find frustrating — and coverage weakens in the immigration corridor and baggage hall where you need it. An eSIMno plan for Lisbon Airport bypasses that friction entirely: your phone connects through NOS or MEO networks the moment airplane mode switches off, and stays connected as you walk from gate to kerb.

The arrival flow at LIS splits Schengen passengers (EU/EEA) from non-Schengen passengers (US, Brazil, PALOP countries). Non-EU queues can stretch 30-60 minutes during peak banks — time you can spend messaging your hotel, checking live gate updates for a connecting flight, or coordinating with the family picking you up at arrivals. TAP Air Portugal passengers connecting to Madeira or the Azores can check real-time gate changes without hunting for a departures board. Rideshare coordination, Metro timing, Aerobus tracking, hotel confirmation — all of it loads on data before you clear customs.

Visiting Humberto Delgado Airport

LIS operates two terminals: Terminal 1 handles arrivals and departures for full-service carriers (TAP, Lufthansa, United, Emirates, British Airways); Terminal 2 handles departures only for low-cost carriers (Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air). There is no airside connection — a free shuttle bus runs every 10-15 minutes between the two, taking around 7-10 minutes depending on traffic.

Transit From the Airport

The Metro Linha Vermelha connects Aeroporto station to São Sebastião (interchange for downtown lines) in around 20 minutes. Trains run from roughly 06:30 to 01:00. The Aerobus operates Line 1 to Cais do Sodré via Rossio and Line 2 to Sete Rios; tickets cost around €4 one-way. Licensed taxis depart from ranks outside both terminals — a trip to Baixa-Chiado runs €10-16 daytime, €13-20 nights/weekends, plus a €1.60 luggage surcharge.

Connecting Flights

Schengen-to-Schengen connections do not require re-clearing immigration. Non-Schengen arrivals connecting to a Schengen flight must clear Portuguese immigration at LIS — budget at least 90 minutes for this transfer type.

Arriving at LIS puts you 7 kilometres from central — one of the closest major airport-to-city-center distances in Europe. The Metro Linha Vermelha runs directly from Aeroporto station to São Sebastião in around 20 minutes, and Uber or Bolt pickups sit at the departures level TVDE zone. Having data active the moment you clear immigration means your rideshare app loads before you reach the kerb, your hotel confirmation pulls up while you wait at baggage claim, and your group chat stays live as you coordinate pickup timing. Humberto Delgado handles arrivals for both Schengen and non-Schengen flights through Terminal 1, with low-cost departures routing through Terminal 2. The free shuttle between terminals runs every 10-15 minutes but requires data to track timing if you're connecting. Non-EU passport queues at immigration can stretch 30-60 minutes during peak banks — time you can spend messaging ahead rather than hunting for a SIM kiosk after clearing. Activate your eSIM after touchdown and your phone connects through NOS or MEO networks before you leave the gate area. Portugal eSIM coverage extends far beyond Lisbon Portela. The same plan keeps working as you ride the Alfa Pendular train to Porto (around 2 hours 40 minutes), explore Sintra's palaces on a day trip, or head south to the Algarve beaches. One purchase, one QR install, nationwide data — no second SIM swap required when you leave the capital.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Find helpful information to answer your questions

What happens when my data plan runs out?
When you use up your data allowance, your connection stops until you top up or purchase a new plan. You can top up directly from the eSIMno Center while connected to Wi-Fi, or buy a new plan if your validity period has expired.
What should I do if I lose my activation QR code?
You can't really lose it - your QR code is in your order confirmation email, and also in the install pop-up on the website. To reopen it any time before activation, tap "Install eSIM" in your order email, or sign in at esimno.com and go to Profile > My eSIMs > Install. Both show the QR code together with the one-tap install link and the manual SM-DP+ / activation code. Note the install codes are one-time-use: once the eSIM is installed on a device they can't be reused - reopen the installer (My eSIMs > Install) to display a fresh QR if you need one.
Can I use the eSIM for my smartwatch?
Some smartwatches (Apple Watch Cellular, Samsung Galaxy Watch LTE) support eSIM, but they typically require a plan from your home carrier rather than a travel eSIM. eSIMno plans are designed for phones and tablets - check device compatibility before purchase if you intend to use a wearable.
Does the eSIM work in rural areas and small towns?
Coverage depends on the partner network's reach in Portugal. Major cities, tourist areas, and highways typically have strong 4G/5G coverage. Remote rural areas may have weaker signal or fall back to 3G. Download offline maps before heading off the beaten path.
Will the eSIM affect my phone's battery life?
Running two SIM lines (physical + eSIM) uses slightly more battery than one, since the phone monitors both networks. The difference is usually 5-10% over a full day. To minimize impact, disable the line you're not actively using or turn off cellular data on the inactive line.
Will my eSIM work in airports immediately after landing?
Yes - eSIMs typically connect within seconds of switching off airplane mode at the gate. Major airports have strong cellular coverage from local partner networks, so you'll have data before reaching baggage claim. No setup needed at arrival.
What smartphones support eSIM?
Most modern devices support eSIM, including iPhone XS and later, Samsung Galaxy S20 through S25 series, Google Pixel 4 and later, Huawei P40 and later, and many recent iPads. Check our full compatibility list before purchasing to confirm your device is supported.
What customer support is available if I have issues?
eSIMno offers 24/7 support via WhatsApp and email. Our human support team - not bots - handles installation help, troubleshooting, billing questions, and refund inquiries. Most issues are resolved within minutes during business hours and within a few hours overnight.
How long is the validity of the Portugal eSIM plans?
The validity of eSIM plans varies from 7 days to 90 days depending on the plan you choose. Lifetime options are also available for travelers who don't want their data to expire after a fixed period.
Will my home phone number receive calls while I use the eSIM?
Yes - if your home SIM stays installed and active, calls and SMS to your home number arrive normally. The eSIM only handles data; voice service stays on your home line. Just remember that incoming calls and texts to your home number while abroad may trigger roaming charges from your home carrier.
How do I top up my Portugal eSIM?
To top up your Portugal eSIM data, log in to the 'My eSIMs' section in the eSIMno Center on our website or mobile app. Select the eSIM you want to top up and follow the on-screen instructions to add more data without losing your current connection.
What network speeds can I expect?
Most eSIMno plans connect at 4G/LTE or 5G speeds depending on local network availability and your device's capabilities. Speed varies by location, network congestion, and signal strength. In major cities and tourist areas, expect speeds comparable to local mobile carriers.
